Carl Dewey, Sr. Obituary

Gilbertville - Carl Thurber Dewey, Sr., passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware.  Carl was born on January 8, 1930 in Westfield, Massachusetts, the son of the late Bertrum Dewey and Eva (Carlson) Dewey.  He was raised and educated in Canton Center, Connecticut and resided in Granby Connecticut for many years before finding the farm of his dreams in the Gilbertville section of Hardwick .  After graduating high school, he furthered his education by enrolling in the University of Connecticut and graduating with a Degree in Agriculture.  Farming was his calling, and he enjoyed every minute of it.  In 1972 he purchased the land that became Pleasant View Farm.  For many years he was a dedicated dairy farmer, and eventually transitioned to raising beef cattle.  Carl loved to track and trap animals, a skill he developed early on during the Great Depression.  Years later, after losing his eyesight he would, with the helping eyes of his daughter-in-law, track and identify, animal tracks in the fresh fallen snow. After his wife passed away in 2001, Carl persevered and went on, but never forgot his loving wife, Nancy (Beckwith) Dewey.  For years he would spend hours with his best friend and fellow farmer Arthur.  Arthur couldn't hear, and Carl couldn't see, but together they got by.  Arthur would drive Carl to look at farm equipment and reminisce about days gone by.  Carl served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He enlisted on December 1, 1952 and was Honorably Discharged on November 6, 1954.  He was proud to be of Swedish descent, and will be remembered as a hard working, strong willed, family man and friend.  Carl leaves behind his loving son and daughter-in-law, Carl T. Dewey, Jr. and his wife Ruth of Gilbertville, and his loving daughter, Laura Lee Dewey of Orange, California.  Sadly, Carl was predeceased by his loving wife, Nancy Dewey in 2001, his daughter, Wendy Lynn Dewey in 2016 and his brothers, Bertrum in 2018, and Paul in 2020.  Cremation took place in Springfield Cemetery and Crematory in Springfield.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 11 AM in the First Universalist Church, 9 Ruggles Hill Road, Hardwick, MA.  In Lieu of floral offerings, memorial donations may be made o the Hardwick Community Fair.  Cebula Funeral Home of Ware is assisting Carl's family with the final arrangements.  For more information, and online guest book, please visit:  www.cebulafuneralhome.com .
