Ellen Elizabeth Mierzewski (Kowalski), 99, of Springfield, MA passed away peacefully on June19, 2024. Born on June 2, 1925, in Gilbertville, MA, she was the beloved daughter of the late
Jozef and Julia (Jasak) Kowalski. A graduate of Hardwick High School, she worked as a receptionist and executive assistant at American Optical Co. for 39 years. Married to Stanley ‘Stas’ Mierzewski for 31 joyful years until his passing in 1995, she was predeceased by her sisters, Josephine (Stanley) Zabek and Ann (Stanley) Zielenski, and nieces
Donna Ellen Zielenski and Sheila Ann (Zielenski) Placzek. Active in her community, she served on the board of directors at the Society of Polish American Culture and was a member of the Springfield Golden Agers. She also volunteered for many years at Shriners Hospital for Children, putting a smile on the face of everyone she encountered. She leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, particularly grandniece Julianne Dias and her husband Antonio, with their children whom she adored Ela, Evan, and Callie; grandnephew Randy Placzek; and nephew Richard Placzek, all of Ludlow. She will be fondly remembered by her "Earth Angel" Jeanne DelMonte, her dear “Mermaids” from the pool at Elms College, and the HMR crafters.
Ellen lived life to the fullest and her love for travel took her around the country and the world, enriching her life with countless adventures. She especially loved traveling to Poland and was
always excited to share her heritage and traditions with others. Ellen also loved to swim, and even well into her 90's you could find her at the pool on most days. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. The family extends special thanks to Ruth's House Assisted Living Residences for their exceptional care and compassion in her final years. A Calling Period will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 9:30 - 10:30 AM in the Cebula Funeral Home Chapel, 66 South St., Ware. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 AM in the Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church, Maple Street, Ware. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Ware.
