George C. Slattery Obituary

Ware - George C.(Sluggo) Slattery, Sr, 84, of Ware, passed away on January 9, 2023 after a brief illness He was born on March 1, 1938 and was a life-long resident of Ware. His parents were the late George H. and Mildred A. (Szadek) Slattery. He attended Springfield Tech and graduated from Ware High School. George was an accomplished mason/stone setter and was a member of Bricklayer Union 1 for over 50 years. He was recipient of the Golden Trowel Award, a prestigious highly coveted award only given to those who have achieved excellence in their work as chosen by their peers. He was often recruited to lead jobs all over the U.S. and abroad. Including installation of 20 karat gold in a Shah’s temple in Saudi Arabia and work on the MGM Grand Casino in Reno, Nevada. A marble statue that he built still stands in the Center of Aruba. He was very passionate about his work and was a skilled craftsman. George enjoyed all outdoor activities including fishing in his boat on the Quabbin, hunting, and landscaping. He was an avid collector of antique cars and he could fix just about anything. He loved playing cards with his friends throughout the local area. He was a member of many local clubs including the Weir River Club, Club 12, and Aspen St. Rod and Gun Club. He was survived by his daughter Dawn Szczygiel of West Brookfield, Sean Slattery and his fiancée Dalgis Llerena of Hardwick, and George C. Slattery Jr and his wife Cheryl of Wilbraham. He is survived by his two brothers John and his wife Mary Slattery and Dennis Slattery as well as six grandchildren, Brooke, Nick, Laney,Ryan and his wife Lisa, Katie and Brenna, and one great grandchild Scarlett. He was predeceased by his brother Charles and his wife Marie Slattery and sister Margaret Delargy who was married to John Delargy of Ware. He is also survived by his former wife Sandra L. Slattery of Ware and was predeceased by his long time companion, Priscilla Taggart . Heartfelt appreciation is given to the staff at Quaboag Nursing Home for exceptional care. Friends and family are cordially invited to the Celebration of Life for Sluggo on Saturday, January 28, 2023, which will be held at Club 12,  130 South St. Ware from 5 to 7 pm.
